Sonji Owens

Sonji Owens is a former elementary school educator. She retired from the Los Angeles Unified School District with 39 years of service. She holds a degree in Liberal Studies from California State University Dominguez Hills. During her employment with LAUSD, she also held the position of a Standard English Learner (SEL) Instructional Coach, where she provided school-site support and built teacher capacity around Culturally and linguistically responsive teaching (CLR). This included conducting demonstration lessons and providing feedback for teachers on CLR instructional strategies and classroom practices relating to Mainstream English Language Development (MELD).

Sonji is dedicated to supporting teachers and students. Her goal is to be a valuable member of the CLR community by assisting teachers in meeting the needs of their diverse learners and creating equitable learning environments.
