Culturally Authentic Texts

Culturally Authentic Texts

All culturally relevant texts are not equally yoked in their cultural authenticity. A Culturally Authentic Text (CAT) is the preferred type of text for the CLR educator. CAT is a piece of fiction or nonfiction that illuminates the authentic cultural experiences of a particular cultural group—whether it addresses religion, socioeconomic status, gender, ethnicity, nationality, orientation , or geographic location. The language, situations, and illustrations must depict culture in an authentic manner as well.

This Month's Spotlight
and Featured Blurb:
GeNie Pearl is no ordinary fifth grader. She possesses a keen understanding of social and cultural cues, a skill that enables her to navigate the complex world of interpersonal interactions with grace and wisdom beyond her years. Her superpower is about empathy, awareness, and the ability to validate and affirm the cultural and linguistic behaviors of those around her. This unique gift makes GeNie Pearl an invaluable ally when misunderstandings arise, particularly in her school, where differences in culture and communication styles often lead to conflict.

Based on the Validating, Affirming, Building, and Bridging or VABBframework, (Hollie, 2018), GeNie Pearl’s World is a series of lessons about the sixteen most commonly misunderstood cultural and linguistic behaviors in school.
