Video: How to Deal with Racial Discrimination

“Racial discrimination and trauma can significantly impact the mental health and well-being of youth of color. Psych Hub’s co-founder, Marjorie Morrison, LMFT, LPCC sits down with Dr. Riana Elyse Anderson, licensed clinical psychologist, Associate Professor at Columbia University School of Social Work, Fellow at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University, and CEO and Founder of RACE Space Inc. In this video, they discuss the impact of racial discrimination on black youth and effective coping strategies. Dr. Anderson explains how racial discrimination affects the psychological, physiological, and neural aspects of youth, leading to issues such as depression, anxiety, and stress. She provides three key coping strategies: self-reflection on race and racism, creating routine discussions about racism, and seeking additional educational resources. Dr. Anderson also introduces her digital mental health app, Teens Navigating the Talk, which aims to help teens talk about, cope with, and confront racism.”
